Association Picnic

What a great time! We had beautiful weather and a good turnout, including some of our friends from the Springfield Model Airplane Club.  We would like to thank Ed Newbold for bringing his food truck to the event. The food was AWESOME!

MERFI 2019

The Association was represented by our own Richard Kaczmerak at the Mid-Eastern Regional Fly-In on August 17th. There were some fabulous civilian aircraft present, and even a C-47. On display are some of his various model aircraft, including the Weeks bipane that he built.

PROPer Safety

Working around moving propeller blades is a hazard that all model RC pilots must learn to safely deal with. Electric motor-driven props are especially hazardous because:

- An energized electrical system appears to be "off" and safe, when in fact it can swing a prop at full force in an instant.

- An electric motor-driven prop will continuously strike objects in its path without stalling, unlike an internal combustion engine.
Electric motor prop strikes can cause serious cuts, break finger bones, and even cut fingers off, so it's important to always be mindful of safe practices, which include:

- Removing the propeller if making adjustments to the electronics in close-quarters, such as in your home, or on a workbench at the flying field.

- Plugging-in the main battery at the flight line, away from bystanders, and unplugging the battery at the flight line immediately after a flight.

- Setting the receiver fail safe and verify that it is working properly.  This prohibits the motor from running uncontrolled if the transmitter is shut off before the model has been powered off.

- Using a throttle-cut switch on your transmitter to "disarm" the throttle stick, if your transmitter has that ability.

-For airplanes with 40-size nitro-equivalent motors and larger, we strongly encourage the use of an external electrical arming system. Click HERE for more information.

The Urbana Flying Association requests that all pilots using our field to please follow these safety practices.

Field Service

Hey Members! This is the height of the flying season, and the Association needs the membership to lend a hand in maintaining the field. Some things you can help with include:
- Field mowing
- Finishing the repairs to the clubhouse roof
- Trimming weeds around the clubhouse
- And anything else you can help with.
Thanks for your help!

Congratulations!

Richard Kaczmarek, our association president, won first place in the R/C scale airplane category at the 49th Westerville Model Aeronautics Association model show this past weekend. The 1/3 scale Fly Baby is powered by a 50cc Fuji gas engine. If you haven't seen one of the planes he has built, be assured that he is a true craftsman. The plane incorporates numerous scratch-built features, and is a true representation of the prototype.

Thanks for Coming!

Thanks to everyone that came to our 2019 swap meet, and to all the club members that helped plan the event and set up. We would also like to extend a special thanks to the Champaign Aviation Museum for hosting the event and donating the B-25 ride. We are very fortunate to have such an excellent museum in our community. There was a good turnout, and it was great seeing our friends from regional clubs.
There she is: The Champaign Gal. Some lucky guy won a ride from the Champaign Aviation Museum on this beautiful B-25.
Museum staff and volunteers were working on the B-17, Champaign Lady, on the other half of the hangar during the swap meet. Where else can you walk among a B-17 restoration and talk to the people building an airplane?
Look-our resident YouTuber! Expect to see footage of the event on his channel. In the background, you can see the museum's C-47, which you can walk inside of.
Mike Barbee and associates from the National Association of Scale Aeromodelers were present, raffling off this awesome Ready-To-Fly Topflite F6F Hellcat. If you haven't bought tickets- you should! See the link to NASA on the right of this page.
If you are an aviation enthusiast and haven't visited the museum, you ought to put it on your list! You can see aircraft under restoration and talk to the people that work on these historic airplanes.
